A Dext alternative for people who mostly need receipts scanned

Dext is a bookkeeping automation platform for businesses and accounting practices. It collects receipts, invoices and statements from its app, email, WhatsApp and supplier portals, matches them against bank transactions, applies the supplier rules you set, and publishes to dozens of accounting platforms. If your practice uses all of that, Dext earns its price.

Plenty of people pay for that whole platform when the job they actually have is simpler: a pile of receipts that needs to become clean records in QuickBooks or a spreadsheet. If that is you, and the price is getting steep for what you use, Bulk Receipt Scanner does that one job well. Spread several receipts out, take one photo, and each receipt comes back as its own record with its line items, ready to send to QuickBooks Online or download as a CSV.

The short version

Stay with Dext if you run a bookkeeping or accounting practice across many clients, rely on bank matching and supplier rules, collect documents by email, WhatsApp or supplier fetch, publish to software other than QuickBooks Online, or process unpaid bills and supplier statements.

Choose Bulk Receipt Scanner if you, your bookkeeper or a small crew need to clear stacks of receipts into QuickBooks Online or a spreadsheet, with every line item, at one simple price.

What Bulk Receipt Scanner checks on every receipt

The math on every receipt is checked and doubtful fields are flagged, so mistakes show up before they reach your books. Each receipt's figures are checked against each other, and anything that doesn't add up is flagged for a look instead of being quietly entered. You still check every receipt: the flags tell you where to look first.

What both do

To be fair about it, some things you may like about Dext you will also get here:

  • Receipts go into QuickBooks Online with the image attached. Dext attaches the original image when it publishes; we attach the receipt photo to the expense we create.
  • Nothing goes in unchecked. Both let you review before anything reaches your books.
  • Duplicates are caught. Dext lists duplicate detection; we flag a receipt that looks like one you already saved, and a receipt already sent to QuickBooks is skipped.
  • A phone app. Dext has one; we have an iPhone app, and the scanner also runs in any phone's browser.

Where Dext is the better fit

  • Bank matching. Dext matches documents to the transactions in your accounting software's bank feed. We don't connect to bank feeds.
  • Supplier rules and auto-publish. Dext can apply a supplier's usual category, tax rate and destination automatically, and publish items as soon as they are ready. We suggest a category from your own QuickBooks setup, and a person confirms it.
  • Practice-wide tools. Dext's practice plans are priced per client and include client deadline dashboards, team and location management, and practice reporting. We have no practice dashboard.
  • More ways in. Email forwarding, WhatsApp, automatic invoice fetch from suppliers, Dropbox, PayPal and Amazon Business. With us, receipts come in as photos.
  • Bills, statements and other ledgers. Dext publishes unpaid costs to QuickBooks Online as bills, extracts bank and supplier statements as add-ons, and works with Xero, Sage and more. We send paid receipts as expenses to QuickBooks Online only.
  • Expense claims and mileage. Dext's app handles both. We don't.

Where Bulk Receipt Scanner is the better fit

  • Piles, not single shots. Lay out up to 8 receipts, take one photo, and each one is read as its own record. A month of receipts is a few photos.
  • Line items without an add-on. Vendor, date, subtotal, tax, total, payment method and every line item, plus tendered and change when the receipt prints them, on every receipt and every plan. That matters for job costing, mixed business and personal receipts, and splitting one receipt across categories, which we send to QuickBooks as one expense with a line per category.
  • One simple price. Individual is $19/month with no document allowance to watch, or $209/year if you'd rather pay yearly, or $349 every 2 years.
  • Already paid by card? If your card charges reach QuickBooks from your bank feed, Match card charges pairs each receipt with its charge and, once you confirm, attaches the photo to it, so nothing is counted twice.
  • Try it without a trial clock. The free plan scans 20 photos a month, and the sample scan needs no account at all.

Questions

Is Bulk Receipt Scanner cheaper than Dext?

For one person scanning receipts, usually. Our Individual plan is $19/month, $209/year, or $349 every 2 years, with no limit on scanning. When we checked Dext's US pricing in October 2026, its business plan was $302.50 a year billed annually for 250 documents a month and up to 5 users, with line-item extraction an add-on after the first five documents each month. If several people need their own logins, or you use Dext's bank and supplier features, compare on those, not on price alone.

Can I scan several receipts in one photo?

Yes. That is what the scanner is built for. Spread up to 8 receipts flat on a contrasting surface so none overlap, and each one becomes its own record with its own vendor, date and total.

Does it connect to my bank feed or use supplier rules?

No. If you depend on either, Dext fits better. What we do instead is read the card charges already in QuickBooks, so you can attach each receipt to its charge, and suggest a category for each receipt from your own QuickBooks setup.

Is the receipt image attached in QuickBooks?

Yes. Each receipt you send arrives in QuickBooks Online as an expense with its photo attached, so the original is one click away at tax time.

Can I use it for my bookkeeping clients?

For one client's QuickBooks, yes: today each account connects one QuickBooks Online company, and for other clients you download a QuickBooks-ready CSV to import. There is also a partner program for bookkeepers and CPAs who refer clients. If you manage dozens of client ledgers from one place, Dext's practice plans are built for that.

How do I switch from Dext?

There is nothing to migrate: scan your next stack here. Receipts already in your books stay where they are. Before you cancel, check your renewal date, since Dext says its annual plans need 30 days' notice before renewal.
